A lawyer for the Baptist University Student Union president, Keith Fong, says he has been released unconditionally, two days after his arrest on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons.
Police say they freed Fong after he refused bail conditions. They said they reserved the right to prosecute him.
Fong was found carrying 10 laser pointers in Sham Shui Po on Tuesday. The arrest sparked a siege of the Sham Shui Po police station on Tuesday night, a light-hearted protest involving the use of laser pens in Tsim Sha Tsui on Wednesday and debate between police and protesters over whether the devices could be considered weapons.
Fong was still being treated in Caritas Medical Centre on Thursday night after being taken ill during his arrest. He is expected to meet the media on Friday.
