Pro-democracy candidate Au Nok-hin has comfortably won the Hong Kong Island geographic constituency in Sunday's Legco by-election, garnering just over half the votes.

He had almost 10,000 more votes than his closest rival, New People's Party member Judy Chan.

However, Au acknowledged that the pan-democrat's share of the vote had dwindled in comparison to past elections, and urged his colleagues to reflect on this and consider the way forward.

“There may be a limitation for democrats in seeking for support for different classes or different sectors in society", Au said.

For her part, Chan said she is optimistic that the pro-establishment camp will build upon their gain in this election.

"I’m very happy with the results because we are only 9,500 votes behind so the difference is a lot [narrower] than 2016, so next time, I think we will work harder and have more votes”, Chan said.

Au is the pan-democratic camp's choice to replace Demosisto member Agnes Chow, who was controversially barred from running in the by-election to replace the seat vacated by her party mate Nathan Law.

Law was disqualified for failing to take his oath properly, while an election official ruled that Chow would have been unable to abide by her promise to uphold the Basic Law, because of her party's support of 'self-determination' for Hong Kong.
