There were ugly scenes in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay on Sunday night as protesters wearing black attacked at least two men in separate incidents, leaving them bloodied and battered.
One incident took place near Times Square, when a group of protesters chased down a middle-aged man in a white shirt.
Even as the cameras rolled, they brought him to the ground, where they punched and kicked him. Some also used umbrellas to hit him as he curled up into a ball in a defensive position.
First-aid volunteers quickly intervened and put themselves between the man and his assailants, treating him on the scene.
With emotions still running high, the first-aid workers led him into a back corridor of the Times Square mall where they bandaged him up. He was seen to be bleeding from the head.
It was not immediately apparent what set off the confrontation.
Another incident saw a man in a black shirt attacked multiple times near the intersection of Hennessy Road and Bowrington Road.
The first assault left the man’s shirt ripped wide open, and after a pause the protesters set on him yet again, punching and kicking.
Again multiple camera operators were broadcasting the beating live online and on television.
He was left with multiple cuts, but he did not respond when volunteer first-aid workers asked him if he wanted to be treated.
Police then arrived, firing tear gas and dispersing the crowd.
Later in the evening, protesters smashed up a taxi that was stopped in the middle of Hennessy Road underneath the Canal Road Flyover. Protesters took turns using rods to break the windshield, headlights, and other parts of the vehicle. They even opened the bonnet to try to damage the engine.
There was no sign of the driver.
Unconfirmed reports from the scene suggest that the protesters had been angry at the driver for driving towards a group of reporters.
