The Hospital Authority said on Thursday that a new Covid-19 treatment centre at AsiaWorld-Expo will begin running in two to three days, featuring 500 beds and three doctors on duty at all times.
Announcing details of the plan on Thursday, a consultant doctor with the authority, Dr Larry Lee, said it will cater to patients aged between 18 and 60 in stable conditions.
He said the centre will help free up beds in hospitals for older patients and those who are more seriously ill.
Lee also eased concerns about the workload and pressure facing staff there.
“The workload there will be less... because the patients are relatively stable, and you can tell the patients to have the vital signs to be checked by themselves,” he explained.
“And also, they will have the medication that will be prescribed on a daily basis and the patients will take the medications by themselves as well,” he said.
“We enable tele-consultations and telecare, so I would think the workload would be fair enough for the healthcare workers there,” said Lee.
AsiaWorld-Expo was previously used as a coronavirus testing centre for incoming travellers before it was transformed into a treatment facility.
