Health authorities on Wednesday reported one new local case of Covid-19 with an unknown source.

Officials said the latest case involved a 76-year-old taxi driver who started coughing on November 10. He last worked on Monday before he was admitted to Princes of Wales Hospital.

He lives in Yuen Tin Court in Sha Tin and works mainly in Kowloon.

This was one of the preliminary positive cases announced on Tuesday.

It's also the latest in a recent spate of coronavirus infections involving taxi drivers in the city. Government plans are in the pipeline requiring certain groups of the population considered high risk to undergo mandatory testing, and some in the taxi trade have suggested that cabbies be included.

The Centre for Health Protection said on Wednesday that there were also two local cases that are linked to previous infections.

In addition, six imported cases were reported, involving arrivals from Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan, the UK and Montenegro.

The latest cases bring Hong Kong’s coronavirus tally to 5,479.
