Agnes Chow talks to RTHK's Janice Wong
Demosisto member Agnes Chow, who was barred from running in last weekend's Legco by-elections, said on Wednesday that she plans to file an election petition even though the pro-democracy camp won the seat on Hong Kong Island she had hoped to contest.
Chow's candidacy was rejected by an electoral officer who said the decision was taken because Demosisto advocates self-determination for Hong Kong people.
Chow said she understands that if her petition is successful, the poll result for Hong Kong Island will be rendered invalid, and another by-election would have to be held.
But she stressed that her main consideration is to uphold the rights of the Hong Kong people and the whole pro-democracy camp when it comes to future elections.
Chow said the returning officer for Hong Kong Island never gave her a chance to explain her political stance before deciding to disqualify her. "So I think it is very important to file the election petition for the future candidates," she said.
Chow told RTHK's Janice Wong that her legal team is currently discussing the details of a petition.
