Hendrick Lui says his phone was smashed up during the alleged attack in Fanling.

Two pro-democracy activists say they were injured in an attack by a group of people in Fanling on Sunday after trying to stop them from pummelling another man.

Hendrick Lui and Wong Ka-ho, who ran unsuccessfully in last year’s District Council elections, say they were in the process of setting up a booth to urge people to join unions, when they saw a young man being attacked by a group of people who were collecting signatures to support new national security legislation under article 23 of the Basic Law.

Footage purportedly of the incident circulating online shows the group slapping, punching and kicking the men repeatedly after they tried to intervene.

The video – apparently taken by a bystander from an elevated position – showed one of them had his phone snatched away and repeatedly smashed on the ground by one of the assailants as they were punched and kicked.

Lui later said it was his phone that was smashed up, after he tried to film what was going on.

Both men reported suffering back and arm injuries in the attack, and Wong went to hospital to treat his injuries.
