The Tourism Board on Tuesday unveiled a plan to give local people "the gift of a free Hong Kong tour" to boost the local economy – but those who want to get a seat need to show they have spent HK$800 in local shops.
Starting from this week, if you manage to get "machine printed" receipts – but not more than two – that add up to HK$800, they can be used to redeem one tour, which would include at an itinerary covering at least half a day, a tour guide, return transport, and one meal.
Details of the tours and the itineraries will not be known until October 27, the day registration starts.
The board said travel agencies will run these tour groups and a maximum of 30 people will be on each trip. In the first phase, 10,000 people will be able to join these tours, which will run for two months.
The board said participants will be able to choose from a list of about 50 immersive tours that will visit social media "check-in" hotspots and "unique Hong Kong attractions".
"It is hoped that these in-depth tours will deepen their understanding of Hong Kong's tourism appeal, so that they can promote Hong Kong to their families and friends in different parts of the world," the board said.
